# Uncollected data is an unplanted seed

> "The data you don't collect today is a seed you never plant; start capturing the critical data streams now so that a tree might bear fruit when you need it."
> — [[entity-bharat-n-anand|Bharat N. Anand]] & [[entity-andy-wu|Andy Wu]]

**Context.** Every activity of a business — customer interactions, operational processes, internal emails and meetings — is a source of proprietary data to be tapped and leveraged. The quote motivates [[claim-data-centralization-moat|the data-moat claim]] and the action to [[action-centralize-proprietary-data|centralize scattered proprietary data]], and it introduces a *forward-looking* imperative: begin capturing critical streams **before** you have a use for them.
