# Rutherford Engine

The engine powering [[entity-product-electron|Electron]] and a flagship example of [[concept-show-dont-tell]] — unveiled at the **Space Symposium** only once a complete physical machine could be displayed. It is the **first-ever 3D-printed, battery-powered (electric-pump) orbital rocket engine**, named after New Zealand physicist **Ernest Rutherford**.

**Enrichment context:** Rutherford is verifiably an electric-pump, largely 3D-printed orbital engine, and it powers Electron's first and second stages.

**Canonical reference:** rocketlabcorp.com → Technology – Rutherford.
