## The map

If the consistent thesis of the series is that *building software is becoming free*, the natural follow-up is *so where does competitive advantage live now?* Five videos answer that question, each pointing to a different surviving moat. Together they form a moat map.

## The five surviving moats

1. **Specification quality and architecture (S01).** [[concept-spec-quality-bottleneck]] and [[action-invest-in-spec-writing]] make spec authorship the durable engineering skill.
2. **Evaluation and organizational velocity (S04).** [[claim-small-teams-advantage]] and [[claim-enterprise-red-tape-bottleneck]] argue speed of iteration becomes asymmetric advantage. [[prereq-evaluation-infrastructure]] is the durable substrate.
3. **Owned context and open formats (S11).** [[concept-file-over-app]] argues storing knowledge in open, controllable formats — not proprietary SaaS — is itself a moat. [[concept-vertical-context]] (S28) generalizes this to proprietary data graphs (e.g., [[entity-notion]], [[entity-palantir-d28]]).
4. **Cognitive architecture (S25).** [[claim-bottleneck-shift]] argues systems-thinking and the [[concept-engineering-manager-mindset]] are the new individual moat. [[concept-incompressible-experience]] argues taste is the bedrock that AI cannot accelerate.
5. **The Five Durable Verticals (S28).** [[framework-5-durable-verticals]] is the explicit topology: [[concept-vertical-trust]], [[concept-vertical-context]], [[concept-vertical-distribution]], [[concept-vertical-taste]], [[concept-vertical-liability]]. The litmus is [[framework-strategic-litmus-test]] / [[quote-strategic-litmus-test]]: 'what do I own that still matters if AI gets 10x better?'

## The unifying logic

Every moat in the list shares one feature: **it is something AI cannot generate from inside the build layer**. AI can write code (kills the implementation moat). AI cannot generate proprietary customer data (preserves the context moat). AI cannot absorb legal liability (preserves the liability moat). AI cannot manufacture the time required to develop taste (preserves [[concept-incompressible-experience]]). AI cannot build organizational consensus (preserves the velocity moat).

## The contrarian counter-claims

Nate is consistently *against* two would-be moats:
- **'Train your own model.'** [[contrarian-training-not-moat]] (S28) and [[contrarian-harness-over-weights]] (S04): startups can't out-train Anthropic; the moat is the runtime / harness / context, not the weights.
- **'Build faster.'** [[contrarian-building-is-not-the-bottleneck]] (S28): production cost is zero; distribution and trust are the bottlenecks.

## For downstream agents

When evaluating a business or career path, run [[framework-strategic-litmus-test]] first. Then map the residual ownership to the appropriate moat in the list above. If the residual ownership maps to nothing — pivot. If it maps to a build-layer skill (UI, syntax, vibe-coding velocity) — pivot harder.
